Once a year, Penn State Athletics is required to report a wide array of financial information to the NCAA. These reports, usually made public sometime between early January to mid February, are the best look underneath the hood of one of the largest athletic departments in the nation.
Highlighting revenue and expense information for each of Penn State’s 31 sports, these reports include recruiting budgets, operational budgets, travel expenses, ticket revenues and more. Coaching salaries are typically not made public, although some buyout information can be discerned in relevant situations.
Penn State’s latest report - released yesterday - encompasses the 2023-24 football season and, elsewhere, Mike Rhoades’ first year at the helm of the men’s basketball program.
I’ve given this a skim already and plan on writing up a few observations soon - I also have an interview request out to get a few questions answered - but for those who like to “do their own research” here you go.
